Hear, Hear
"The history of any country, presented as the history of a family, conceals fierce conflicts of interest (sometimes exploding, most often repressed) between conquerors and conquered, master and slaves, capitalists and workers, dominators and dominated in race and sex. And in such a world of conflict, a world of victims and executioners, it is the job of thinking people, as Albert Camus suggested, not to be on the side of the executioners.” ~ Dr. Martin L. King Jr., “Beyond Vietnam – A Time to Break Silence,” April 4, 1967
Dr. King left a legacy of insightful and wisdom laden quotes that is unexcelled by any American "leader" of the 20th century... We seem compelled to resist and or destroy the best of ourselves and he surely exemplified our best. RIP
ReplyDeleteVeganelder,
ReplyDeleteTrue. There are some people who would steal and twist the legacy of Dr. King and any other great mind against the Status Quo, and use it for their own gains. These are the people that stand against his ideals, who would, if they had a chance back in the day, side with others to destroy him and his words.
I'm glad to see your comments, Veganelder and Brotha Wolf, because I was concerned that some might see the photo I used as somehow disrespectful. We usually see "prettier" or more "inspiring" photos to celebrate MLK Day. And I always feel we're somehow missing his point when we do that. I heard a young man do the whole "I Have a Dream" speech yesterday and it says a whole lot more -- and in a much more challenging way -- than just those few warm and fuzzy lines right at the end. Which is exactly what I would have expected of Brother Martin.
