I'm not supposed to be a race scholar but it has become hard to avoid, since the issue stares one in the face each day.

Just as a categorization issue, it's fascinating. I'm obviously Caucasian (or so one would think), but it appears that much hanging out in foreign countries has caused me not to 'seem quite white'. This confuses people, and from that confusion, I learned that racial identity is (also) some kind of practice, or set of practices. Exactly which, I am not yet sure.Professor Zerohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04909063513731044826noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16645996.post-1139453247860760002006-02-08T20:47:00.000-06:002006-02-08T20:47:00.000-06:00Well put, Koryn. Without repeating the whole story the last words of the fable is where the scorpion says “I could not help myself, it is my nature”.
Now I don’t know much since i'm just a simple student but I tend to believe that when things don’t make sense in our world, in our logic and reason, we find the quickest explanation even if the explanation doesn’t make sense. I also believe that when these times in our lives come up and the doctrine doesn’t fit into reality of our lives we find quick resolutions which is usually relative to the situation. We lie to ourselves to end the anguish of being confused. I hate to admit it but I think that it’s apart of our nature. Was “K” different from the other African American children, maybe but I doubt it. The white child simply told himself a lie to justify him playing with one black kid but not all.

People need the lie and the malleability of racial identity. I see and agree with the fascination of it all because someone has perpetuated the lie that it’s something that we simply are rather than being done. So, of course its not surprising, its something we all do everyday, its taught to the point where we cant even help ourselves, its in our nature.

Koryn BoydAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com
